Graduate Lifeguard Project
DofE programme with the SLSGB

Launch of the Graduate Lifeguard Project for the Saunton Sands

"Mark Turner of SLSGB visited the Club House on Saturday, 9th January to launch the Graduate Lifeguard Project for the Saunton Sands Juniors. Our first GLP participants were given their GLP kit and workbooks. The GLP modules will include competence in Tube and Board Rescue, gaining an understanding of the Beach Environment and understanding how fitness, health and lifestyle are all essential to help lifeguards be as effective as possible in a lifesaving situation! One of the first projects for the GLP candidates is to prepare and make a presentation to give to a school group explaining what surf lifesaving is all about - part of the leadership programme for the young lifeguards. Congratulations to Emma, Gus, Laura, Billie-Jo and Kane for taking up the GLP challenge. Thank you to Gill and all our fantastic SLS trainers at Saunton for agreeing to run the programme. The Graduate Lifeguard Project is a new qualification for 14 to 16 years olds equipping the participants with all the skills and knowledge they will need to be able to do the full lifeguard training programme once 16.

Alex and Morgan, Frilly and Gus are our first Duke of Edinburgh Award candidates to undertake the scheme with the Club.
Saunton Sands will offer all the sections of the Award through the club, including the expedition!
Additional interests/hobbies/skills and volunteering outside Surf Lifesaving can be added into the awards too - the programmes are individually created to suit each participant.
If anyone would like more information on either the GLP or the DofE, please email Jo Dunbavin at or telephone 01598 710277."
